How to Learn Python from Scratch (A Week-by-Week Plan That Works)

Learning Python fails for one boring reason: no sequence. Beginners bounce between random tutorials, learn the same print() five times, and never touch files, errors, or projects. This guide gives you the sequence that actually works.

Start with setup, not syntax (Week 1)

Install Python 3, pick one editor (VS Code), and learn to run a file from the terminal. Your first milestone is unglamorous: python hello.py prints your name. Most courses skip this and it haunts learners for months — every later error becomes two mysteries instead of one.

Learn the core in this order (Weeks 2–4)

Follow this dependency chain and don't skip ahead:

  1. Variables and data types — strings, numbers, booleans, and type conversion.
  2. Control flow — if/else, for and while loops. Write ten tiny loop programs before moving on.
  3. Data structures — lists, tuples, dicts, sets. Dictionaries deserve a full week; they power nearly everything later, including JSON and APIs.
  4. Functions and scope — parameters, return values, and the one rule beginners break constantly: variable scope.
# The pattern behind 80% of beginner programs
def summarize(scores):
    total = sum(scores)
    return {"count": len(scores), "average": total / len(scores)}

print(summarize([80, 90, 100]))

Build before you feel ready (Weeks 5–8)

Reading about code doesn't teach coding. After functions, build: a to-do CLI, a CSV analyzer, a small web scraper. Ugly and finished beats elegant and abandoned — every project forces you through errors, debugging, and reading tracebacks, which is the real curriculum.

The three traps that stall beginners

  • Tutorial hopping — one resource at a time. Finish it or formally quit it, never drift.
  • Skipping errors — read every traceback top to bottom; the last line names the problem, the lines above show where.
  • No retrieval — retyping examples feels like learning and isn't. Close the tab and rebuild from memory, then quiz yourself.

Keep momentum with a system
